Partners in Project Green’s Water Stewardship program provides businesses with two areas of supportive focus – Natural Infrastructure and Climate Resiliency and Water Efficiency.
The Natural Infrastructure and Climate Resiliency program helps property managers, commercial developers, industrial manufacturers, institutional facilities, and business owners understand their climate risks and identify opportunities to mitigate those risks, providing support to take action and become more resilient. We support companies in identifying ways to reduce impermeable surfaces through on-site implementation of natural infrastructure on corporate properties and through business-led sponsorship of stormwater offset projects.
Partners in Project Green is proud to have published The Business Case for Natural Infrastructure in May 2020 and an article in ReNew Canada magazine in July 2020 which serves as starting references for companies to explore how they can become more resilient against climate change related risks such as flooding and extreme weather.
The Water Efficiency program helps businesses in the Greater Toronto Area implement water conservation projects in their facilities, minimizing process and wastewater operational footprint costs and maximizing environmental benefits.
With a direct partnership with business engagement, outreach, and incentive programs offered by Region of Peel, City of Toronto, and York Region, these programs provide supportive resources and incentives to help lower the capital costs required to implement water efficient upgrades.
In 2020, this collaboration between Partners in Project Green and our municipal stakeholders provided support to five businesses who completed these water efficiency upgrades, resulting in approximately 289.8 million litres of process water and wastewater operational footprint reductions, which is equivalent to 116 Olympic sized swimming pools.
At the end of November 2020, Partners in Project Green convened the first Water Stewardship Industry Roundtable with a variety of industrial, commercial, and institutional community members including the following:
- Air Canada
- Dextran Products
- Greater Toronto Airports Authority
- Region of Peel
- Seneca College
- Unity Health
- University of Toronto Mississauga
- York Region
The aim of the Roundtable was to identify the common challenges and opportunities available in managing water utility operational footprints and on-site stormwater management, share industry case studies and best practices to encourage companies to pursue similar implementation opportunities, and to inspire industry leadership and collaborative goals. The Roundtable identified eight actions that Partners in Project Green will move forward with in 2021, which may lead to the establishment of a Water Leaders Consortium.
