Faced with salt shortages and growing demand for more sustainable alternatives, many municipalities and winter maintenance contractors have been forced to adopt different approaches to ensuring winter safety. Some of the alternatives used have been treated salt, pickled sand, and liquid de-icing and anti-icing products.
On September 9th, 2026, Partners in Project Green was joined by Smart About Salt Council, King Township, Liquids Revolution, and EcoSolutions to share best management practices for winter road salt alternatives. The discussion focused on winter safety best practices, real-world examples of how road salt alternatives are being used, lessons learned, and the benefits and barriers of their uptake. The best management practices and effective use of road salt alternatives have demonstrated reduction in chloride application, thereby reducing the amount ending up in surrounding soils and waterways.
