Days of Awareness: November
Partners in Project Green shares Days of Awareness each month to spread awareness and start conversations. These days may have a social, historical, or sustainable significance worthy of our attention. These are just a small sampling of important days to acknowledge or remember. If we missed any days of importance that should be included, please share them with us.
November is a month of reflection, remembrance, and learning. This month, we invite you to explore several Days of Awareness that highlight environmental health, Indigenous history, safe sanitation and social justice, along with practical ways individuals and communities can take action.
Radon Action Month
November is Radon Action Month in Canada, an opportunity to raise awareness about radon and encourage people to test their homes and buildings.
Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that can enter buildings through contact with the ground. It is colourless, odourless and tasteless, so testing is the only way to know the radon level in a building. Long-term exposure to elevated radon levels increases the risk of lung cancer, making testing an important step in understanding and reducing potential exposure.

Indigenous Veterans Day – November 8
Indigenous Veterans Day is observed each year to recognize the contributions and sacrifices of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis people who have served Canada in times of war, conflict, and peace.
The day provides an opportunity to learn about the long history of Indigenous military service in Canada and to recognize the experiences of Indigenous service members and Veterans as part of Canada’s history of remembrance.
It follows Treaties Recognition Week, which provides us with a meaningful opportunity to deepen our understanding of the critical importance of treaties as foundational agreements. It also highlights the ongoing significance of treaty rights and relationships, and their continued relevance in our work and lives today. In 2016, Ontario passed Bill 207,the Treaties Recognition Week Act, the first legislation of its kind in Canada. This recognition reminds us that treaties are living agreements that continue to guide our shared stewardship of the land.

World Toilet Day – November 19

Safe sanitation is essential to healthy and resilient communities. World Toilet Day is a United Nations observance held annually on November 19 to draw attention to the global sanitation crisis. Established as an official UN Observance in 2013, the day marks the anniversary of the founding of the World Toilet Organization in 2001. According to UN-Water, roughly 3.6 billion people worldwide still live without access to a safely managed toilet, a gap with serious consequences for public health, dignity, the environment, and economic development.
Ways to get involved and additional resources:
- Help protect local wastewater systems by avoiding flushing oils and other materials that do not belong in the system: https://www.ocwa.com/community-overview/i-dont-flush/

International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women – November 25
November 25 is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, a United Nations observance that raises awareness of violence against women and girls around the world.
On this day, we’re invited to reflect on how violence against women and girls shows up in our own communities and workplaces, and to support the organizations and survivors working to prevent it.
The day also marks the start of the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, an annual campaign that runs through Human Rights Day on December 10.

About Days of Awareness
Since its launch in 2023, Partners in Project Green’s Days of Awareness campaign has become a monthly celebration of the days, events, and observances that matter most to our community. Designed to highlight moments of social, historical, cultural, and environmental significance, this initiative invites us to pause, reflect, and engage in meaningful conversations that extend beyond sustainability alone.
Each month, we spotlight a curated selection of awareness days to honour the diversity of our team, Members, and the communities we serve — fostering connection, inclusion, knowledge-sharing, and collective action across our network.
