Diversity in Sustainability: Sharing Power and Privilege as Organizational Leaders in Sustainability

On September 24th, 2024, Partners in Project Green (PPG) partnered with Diversity in Sustainability (DiS) to host a facilitated discussion Sharing Power and Privilege as Organizational Leaders with sustainability leaders across different sectors.

Heather Mak, co-founder of DiS, gave an overview presentation on their Theory of Change and the Inclusion Blueprint Dialogues, using dialogue as a tool to build capacity for inclusion in the workplace and ultimately, drive social change in the sustainability sector. In this specific dialogue session, we explored the
unique challenges that sustainability leaders face in cultivating inclusive workplaces and how
power and privilege can be shared with others to create a more accessible sector.

19 sustainability leaders gathered at York University for an intimate and fruitful discussion; we explored 3 key questions:

  • What prevents you from creating an inclusive culture?
  • What privileges have you accumulated over time in the workplace and in the sector?
  • How can you use your power and privilege to create an inclusive culture in your organization? And within the sector?
