Partners in Project Green shares Days of Awareness each month to spread awareness and start conversations. These days may have a social, historical, or sustainable significance worthy of our attention. These are just a small sampling of important days to acknowledge or remember.
Hindu Heritage Month: All November
Last year Canada marked November as its first official Hindu Heritage Month to celebrate the richness of Hindu culture and to acknowledge the accomplishments made by those of Hindu heritage in Canada.
Treaties Recognition Week: Nov 5 – 11
From November 5-11, 2023, Treaties Recognition Week highlights the importance of treaty rights, treaty relationships and their relevance today. This annual recognition started in 2016, when Ontario passed the first legislation of its kind in Canada, declaring the first full week of November as Treaties Recognition Week.
Transgender Awareness Week: Nov 13-19
Every year, Transgender Awareness Week is observed from November 13-19 and leads up to the Transgender Day of Remembrance on November 20—a day to memorialize victims of transphobic violence. Originally November 20 was a vigil to honour Rita Hester, a trans woman who was murdered in 1998.
International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women – Nov 25
International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women is to bring awareness to about violence against women and girls. It’s estimated globally, 736 million women — almost one in three — have been subjected to physical and/or sexual intimate partner violence, non-partner sexual violence, or both, at least once in their lifetime (United Nations). In Canada, “more than 4 in 10 women have experienced some form of intimate partner violence (IPV) in their lifetimes. In 2018, 44% of women reported experiencing some form of psychological, physical, or sexual violence by an intimate partner in their lifetimes (Statistics Canada, 2021).” (Canadian Women’s Foundation).
